Long-Term Goals Are Malarkey
What is your chess goal for 2024?Here we go again... I understand wanting to attract social media attention, but et tu, Lichess? Come on, we track progress in:
- Basics, Practice, and Coordinates
- Puzzle Dashboard
- My Tournaments and Teams
- Openings (beta)
- Ratings history (profile page)
... so by now we should know that setting "long-term goals" (i.e., dreams) is less effective than setting goals (i.e., short-term reachable goals, what goals actually are).
As author of You Need Two Wins Per Game I may be underqualified to explain this concept, so allow CGP Grey to explain it once more. Happy new year!

Is chess fun?
The more complex a game, the harder and more rewarding it can be to study.![fallen chess king](https://image.lichess1.org/display?h=250&op=thumbnail&path=toadofsky:ublog:2XgpTpUx:Y0nzwk3G.jpg&w=400&sig=45a4bbb01de98ebca7cc9923c652e8d31fe60c22)

Opportunism
Never interrupt an opponent while he is making a mistake.![Dewey defeats Truman](https://image.lichess1.org/display?h=250&op=thumbnail&path=toadofsky:ublog:8NPJVwgq:5ZkT3Dif.jpg&w=400&sig=001c91759b35fa9521f89eafbd8c6f768b03847d)
